Reports presented to the A.G.M November 2011:
Presidents Report:
I have great pleasure in presenting the Presidents
report for 2011.
On reflection 2011 has been a catch up year for the
club with most of the Capital spent on development
and machinery over the last two years we have had a
year of consolidation.
I would like to say our two major events for the
year being firstly the NZ autumn Foursome then the
36 hole tournament were a credit to the club and the
organising committees have been congratulated by
many people and rightly so. The Autumn Foursome
committee have been nominated to the Go Geraldine
awards.
Although we have not been to the fore in pennant or
other club competitions the club has been well
represented and a good effort has been put in by all
those who participated.
It would be fair to say we have not been flooded
with new members and it is one area where we need to
do more work to attract young and not so young
players to the game.
It was with sadness that we farewelled Helen Carroll
during the year.
I would like to congratulate George Leslie on
becoming a life member and in my opinion this honour
bestowed on George is befitting a club member who
has served the club well and donated more than
generously to our club. During the year George has
instigated the calf finishing scheme by donating 26
calves to the club which with generous offers from
club members we are able to graze these on to
forward stores or prime cattle.
I would take this opportunity to make a special
mention of Simon for his ability to turn Denfield
Golf course in to one of the premier courses in
South Canterbury and a golf course we can be proud
of.Of course volunteers that helped out during the
year must also be thanked sincerely especially
people like Barry Hill. We as club members need to
step up and assist as this club will not survive by
employing more people so give it some thought as you
play golf on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday what
could you could do to help around the course.
Finally to the committee over the last year thank
you for the support you have given me and also for
my term as president. I would like to wish the new
committee all the best in the future.
Max Bensemann
Treasurers Report 2011
The 2010/11 financial year has been one of mixed
results. A positive to the year was the Autumn
Foursomes which brought in $10000 to the club.
Although the cost of running this event was
demanding financially and physically it did a great
deal for us in the national golf scene and in the
community. I am now working on gaining another such
tournament.
Our 36 hole tournament was a financial success
thanks to great sponsor support, efficient catering
and incredible generosity from members.
Also I am delighted that we were given two grants
from the Southern Trust, $5000 for our new greens
mower and $12,500 towards our Greenkeeper salary.
Our nett surplus (without the large depreciation
figure )was still modest bearing in mind we received
two grants (which cannot be depended on in future
years).Due to the significant depreciation figure
which is very indicative of how large an amount we
will need in the future to maintain and upgrade our
plant & machinery the club will need to keep costs
down and keep a good income flow. We will now need
to have $10000 per year set aside to build for
future capital projects.
Another positive on this is the very generous
donation of 26 calves which will be sold by 2013,
the club will benefit from the sale of these
animals. Also thanks to the farmers who are grazing
them for us.
Issues I see financially in our club start with
unity of purpose. Every member must be aware of the
fantastic , unique facility we have and must
understand the high cost of maintaining it for
present and future members. It is not just about
balancing our own groups accounts but about ensuring
all efforts benefit the whole club. We have a
community facility which with good management goals
and support should aim to become a strong and
important part of our community.
Green fee collection must now also become an
integral part of being a member and this summer we
will run a roster to assist in Green fee takings.
Our Green fee income is down and I am certain we
have many locals and visitors who don’t quite
understand the honesty system!!
Our bar as we are all aware plays a large financial
part of our club. But the increased cost of liquor,
our choice to have such a wide selection of spirits
and our very reasonable prices has meant the nett
surplus is down and will continue to fall unless we
adjust prices. Tighter management controls including
regular stocktakes would also help.
Finally I would like to thank Mike Sepie our auditor
for his ongoing patience and strict analysis of our
financial situation. Also to Pat Fallon from
Accountablility for his enormous effort and time in
assisting me in finalizing our accounts.

Men's
Captains Report 2011
It gives me great pleasure to present my first
annual report as Club Captain. First and foremost I
want to begin by thanking Dennis Goodwin (past Men’s
Captain) and Roger Irvine (Vice Captain) for their
guidance and support throughout the year.
Saturday competitions have gone well this year with
several large fields, some very good scores, strong
competition for most trophies and a welcoming social
atmosphere for visitors and locals alike. My sincere
thanks to all the starters for organising the draws
and doing the results. Thank you also to Simon
Wright for the outstanding manner in which the
course has been presented each week.
The 36-Hole Tournament committee trialled a new
pairs format for 2011. This proved to be extremely
popular so we had to limit the entries to 132
players (92 men and 40 women). The tournament was
successful from financial, social and golfing
perspectives but due to some issues over prizes the
organising committee have decided to revert to the
traditional individual medal format in 2012.
Club championships were again well supported with
Simon Wright, Errol Rix, Gary Knight and Bruce
Robertson all winning their grades. Simon, Errol and
Gary then excelled by winning every grade and the
overall trophy in a clean sweep of the Aorangi
Champion of Champions competition – a superb
achievement! Well done to all involved.
We entered teams in all 6 Men’s Pennants grades this
year and also had a combined team with Grande Vue in
the Redpath grade. However only the Holmes Cup and
Penney Salver teams made the semi-finals. The Holmes
team won their semi 12-0 but lost the final 8-4 to
Ashburton. The Penney Salver team play Peasant Point
A in their semfinal next Mon 07 Nov. Thank you to
all players who represented us in 2011 and special
thanks to the team captains who organised their
players and the transport to make it all happen.
Hopefully the results will be better next year.
Interclub matches were played against
Waimakariri Gorge away,
Lower Waitaki away, Mayfield away and Grande View
away - unfortunately we finished second in all these
matches so the trophy cabinet is a bit bare at
present but we will try to rectify this in 2012.
Most improved golfer for the year was Josh Trubshaw.
His handicap on opening day was 36.4 and on closing
day was 29.9; an impressive reduction of 6.5 and it
would not surprise me to see Josh win this trophy
again as his golf continues to improve.
Players selected for Aorangi representative teams
this year included Simon Wright (Toro Mens tourn &
Freyberg Masters) and George Wardell (SBS Mens tourn
& SI Interprov.) – congratulations to both players.
Thank you also to Helen May and Kit Silcock for
their continued support for junior golf - their
efforts are bringing many benefits to our club.
I am looking forward to the coming year with Howard
Chellew as the new Vice Captain. With the club’s
continued support we should be able to build upon
the successes of 2011.
Kerry Stevens
Womens
Captain’s Report 2011
It is my pleasure to present the Captain’s report
for 2011.
The weather this last month has been poor on
Tuesdays. Apart from that, we have had good numbers
with fields mostly in the 20’s and 30’s.
Congratulations to all members who have represented
the club in either Vets, Weekend Pennants or Open
Pennants teams. We had two teams in the Open
Pennants and the no.1 team got to the quarter
finals, our best effort for the season.
In the club championships, one of the two qualifying
rounds was cancelled and we substituted for it the
Lapthorne Trophy, best two of three nets to decide
the list of qualifiers. The 2011 Club Champions are:
Silver – Ginny Bolderston (runner up was Heather
Oldfield)
Bronze 1 – Dot Kelland (runner up was Shona
Bensemann)
Bronze 2 & 3 combined – Helen May (runner up was
Cheryl Jopp)
Silver Plate – Susan Lyttle (runner up was Pam
Leslie).
The other plate winners had no games.
Winner of the Singles Knockout from 32 entries was
Heather Oldfield (runner up was Sally Stevens).
The Four Ball Best Ball was won by Liz Lewis and
Shona Bensemann over Heather Oldfield and Sue
Donovan. The Foursomes Knockout was not contested as
there were only three entries.
Thank you to all participants in Aorangi and other
tournaments, including our own. We had a number of
successes.
Our greatest success was the NZ Autumn Foursomes,
headed by Denise Langdon and Kim Buckley. Our
tournament committee of Shona Bensemann, Ginny
Bolderston, Jenny Kellahan, Denise Kenny and myself
did a fantastic job. Through Denise, Barkers are now
a major sponsor for all major NZ womens tournaments.
Thank you to all club members for helping in so many
ways and to those who participated in the event. It
definitely put Geraldine on the map.
Congratulations to Sue Donovan for the hole in one
she achieved on no.17. Sue also went through the
Rules of Golf training course along with Margaret
Bolton. Congratulations also go to Marilyn Mulvena
who placed 6th in NZ (best Aorangi score)
in the Sue Bunt Salver.
We had a successful visit from 18 ladies from
Central Otago one club day. Bronwyn Fleming from
Central got a hole in one on no.12. We also sent
four teams to the Murray Halberg at Waimate; the
event raised over $1000.
Congratulations to our members who were chosen as
representatives:
·
Jenny Kellahan as Aorangi South Canterbury selector,
·
Ginny Bolderston and Jenny Kellahan in the
provincial team to play in Whakatane on 6-10
December. They also played at the Masters in
Wellington (Nov 3-5), the Templar Trophy at
Ashburton and the SI Interprovincial at North Otago,
·
Heather Oldfield at the Templar Trophy and reserve
for the SI Interprovincial,
·
Natalie Rix at the Millenium Trophy at Greendale.
My thanks go to Margaret and Averill for a lovely
mystery trip to Lincoln. My thanks also go to my
very efficient committee. Margaret Bolton was my
vice captain, Marie Blackmore (Secretary) who keeps
me so well informed on what comes through to her
computer, Mary (Treasurer), Margaret Campbell
(Handicapper), Heather and Meryl and also Averill
and Barbara who will be leaving committee for next
year. My thanks also to all the others who assist
whether on food, morning tea or with the office
work; it all makes my job easier.
Congratulations to all our trophy winners this
season. Next year it may be someone else’s turn. I
wish you all well for the coming festive season and
am looking forward to the 2012 golfing
year.
Jenny Lawson
9 Hole Women’s Report 2011
Our membership started out this year with about 23
actual players. Through the year we have lost a few
through health issues etc. We are hoping that some
of the older 18 hole members may consider joining
the 9 hole ladies. It is difficult getting new
members to join with the subscription being so high,
the highest 9 hole sub in South Canterbury.
We have had good competition days and I’m pleased to
see the trophy’s being spread amongst our members.
The Senior Champion is Marg Matheson and the Junior
Champion Jenny Smith. Congratulations to Marilyn
Mulvena for being the lowest scoring golfer in South
Canterbury and the 7th in N.Z. list for 9
hole” Homelinks” competition. Pity she had to find
out about it from her old club’s friends [who
contacted her and she wondered what it was about] I
had not been informed by our 18 hole ladies
committee. Liaison between the two groups of ladies
this year has been rather lacking.
Our May tournament went off very well with 44
players from 12 clubs and the September
Grandmother’s had a lot of happy grandmother’s. We
are going to look at making it Veterans and maybe
including men next year. Numbers seem to be down
where ever we have gone for tournaments. We are
lucky to have had about the same as last year.
This year Eleanor and Marilyn took us on our Mystery
bus trip to St. Andrew’s club for our game of golf
and then to the St. Andrew’s pub for our lunch. If
you want somewhere to go for a meal we would well
recommend it as they put on a beautiful lunch for us
and the décor of the pub is something worth seeing.
Because of our smaller numbers this year we used the
Geraldine Community bus with Colleen driving for us.
Always a willing person, thank you Colleen [and she
did start of golf as a nine holer.
Next year we are going to lose a very valued member
of the 9 hole group because of ill health. Margaret
Coulter was a foundation member of this group, she
has been a convenor, on the committee for numerous
years as well as a meticulous record keeper. Her
knowledge of the game has been invaluable to us. She
will be sorely missed by us all.
Thanks to Alister for manning the bar for our
tournaments and other occasions as needed. To Simon
and his helpers for keeping the course looking good
and challenging. Must say not very keen on the long
grass in front of the Tee on number 3 not very good
for those who are not big hitters. I thank all my
committee and members for the help they have given
for tournaments from making squares and providing
raffles We always have great raffle table so a big
thank you from me.
We were disappointed we didn’t get the help to run
the HSBS golf challenge we do need to be doing
something to encourage more members and this would
have been a good start.
Val Trezise
Grounds report 2011
Barry Hill finally stood down after a long and
dedicated period of service as Grounds Convenor. We
were not able to find an immediate replacement.
Highlights of the year include:
-
New direction signs around the course;
-
New entrance wall built with low level lights;
-
Big collective effort made to present the course
at its best for the NZ Womens Autumn Foursomes;
-
Gum tree to the right of 16 fairway blown down
and replaced with several new trees;
-
Tree overhanging the bunker on 9 removed;
-
Irrigation sprinklers for 5 tees relocated;
-
Much preparatory work done on new tees and
fairway for 12.
These items are, of course, over and above all the
routine work of mowing, spraying, undercutting,
repairing of storm damage etc. etc. A very big thank
you is due to:
-
Simon for the skill and dedication he shows and
the pride he takes in presenting the course as
well as it can be;
-
To Barry for his dedication and organization;
-
To all those who have given their time and
energy on working bees of all sorts – without
willing volunteers we would not be able to
maintain such a prized facility for all our
members and visitors.
Bar Report 2011
Most noticeable this year has been the collapse of
our alcohol supplier , Highfield liquor. This has
caused me some adjustment problems as my old
computer doesn't want to talk to their flash model
at South Pacific Liquor. I,m grateful for the fax as
a backup which isn't quite as convenient.
My gut feeling for this year was that turnover would
be down a bit. The bleak spell of cold winter
weather affected attendances negatively for about a
month. Also a number of course bookings returned
very low returns which indicates some organisations
(Railways) are finding hard to get people to turn up
to their golf tournaments. Interestingly they
thought the earthquake impacted badly on enthusiasm
and ability to communicate.
Profit should be about the same as last year- down a
little- because buying and selling prices changed
very little.
The Chilling Plant hasn't caused any problems this
year. It remains for me to get mine back in working
order.
Alister South
Buildings
Report 2011
2011 has been a quiet year compared to 2010 as far
as the buildings convener goes,
with just a few problems with the nail in the
roof. Thanks to Noel Lewis and Gary Muff the problem
has been solved.
We have installed a new flat screen television
courtesy of Bruce Robertson who donated the T.V and
Thanks to John Shirtcliff
and Noel Lewis for the installation of both the T.V.
and the dish. Special Thanks to all the
volunteers for their
help this year.
Grant Robertson
Catering
It has been great being back organising the catering
for 2011 and all in all it has been a profitable and
enjoyable experience.
Most of the catering has seen a net profit as I,
with Ginny's permission, have run with the idea of
keeping everything as simple as possible for me and
for her with the less paper work as possible and
paying cash where possible.
The 36 hole tournament as always is the biggest
event on the club calendar. Because of such a big
field (all good) it does take a bit of keeping food
hot and serving is always a bit manic but we get
there and being golfers we all know how to be
patient!!! We also catered for Jean Pearces 90th
birthday and the men's pennants always show a good
profit and appart from that the only other catering
this year has been the Railways (their numbers were
down this year as a lot of their Christchurch
players have moved and their addresses were lost
but they are hopeful that numbers may pick up again
next year) and also the Fonterra group.
I just wish it was possible to make our kitchen more
user friendly and my wishlist for the club would
be that maybe it is time to spend some money in that
area making cupboards and bench tops more modern. It
is well over 20 years since that area has had a
makeover. With some new cabinets (drawers rather
than cupboards) and getting rid of the shelving and
making that area more useful instead of a dumping
ground that is the bane of my life would be well
worth the investment.
The loss of equipment from the kitchen is also a
major concern. If I do the catering again next year
I will be introducing the borrow book again where
anything borrowed from the kitchen must be signed
out and signed back in with the authority of the
catering convenor or ladies club captain. It makes
one wonder how if you take something it can't be
returned.
A big thank you to the girls who have been so
willing to help, most never have to be asked twice,
it only takes one turn in the kitchen a year to keep
things ticking over nicely.
Merry Christmas and a safe happy New Year. I move
the adoption of my report.
Jan Oliver
Social
Convenor’s Report 2011
The 2010 Christmas Hamper was very successful as was
the Summer Ambrose Tournament. There was 19 teams
entered and players had three very enjoyable nights.
Due to other commitments there has been no other
social events held during the year.
Shona Bensemann
Junior Golf 2011
Kit Silcock has been taking the “older” juniors on a
Thursday afternoon and Jo Gallichan and I have
involved with the “younger” juniors on a Monday
afternoon. The numbers on a Monday fluctuate with
the weather and if there are any other activities
on, but we have got a good core group. It averages
out at around 7 per week attending. Just a good
number for us to handle.
This year has seen the Aorangi South Canterbury
Junior Golf Foundation hold golfing tournaments
during the Christmas, April and October school
holidays (normally 4 venues each holiday’s). The
Eagles Golfing Society has come on board with this
and is providing prizes for the series annually.
There has been 1 junior tournament held at the
Geraldine District Golf Club in each of these
series. Thanks to the club and members for your
support with this. Special thanks to Jenny Lawson
and the ladies for accommodating us on the ladies
postponement day (Thursday) in October. It is great
that the club is so willingly to have the course use
as a venue for this series.
We have had 18 holers and 9 hole (ambrose) teams
attend these events. I have heard nothing but
positive words from those that have attended. It is
a fun day out for all.
On Sunday 6th November we held a “Give
golf a go” day, thanks to Dennis Goodwin, Kathryn
May, Jenny Lawson and Margaret Bolton for helping on
the day. We had 7 turn up on the day. From that 3
are going to join on a Monday, and the others are
thinking about it. We also had 2 adults turn up on
the day.
Helen May
2011 Handicappers Report
The hadicapping for the club has gone very well this
year. Thanks to all involved.
The system is now done on line and makes the job
very easy and less time consuming, as far as the
roll over is concerned.
Thank you to Susan Lyttle for the up grade of the
club computer.
Also thank you to the members who for the majority
fill in their cards correctly, it does make the job
simple. Name and CORRECT ID Number, the two most
important pieces of information is all that is
needed. This information is posted on the notice
board outside the club house. PLEASE CHECK.
Sorry to any member if your card has not been
processed during the year, but we do endeavour to
get them all. Some times they may fall through the
gaps.
Once again thanks to everyone for their help.
M Campell.
Gardens
I have enjoyed my time with the gardens trying to
keep them attractive for all to enjoy. The new
gardens along the entrance way are growing well and
very pretty now with all the blossoms out.
I do thank those members who have donated trees and
or shrubs and also straw and mulch and thank you to
those who helped lay this on the gardens.
There is a problem with rabbits who have sadly
enjoyed feasting on the new shrubs in the garden
outside the clubhouse.
I have found it difficult at times finding help and
I thank those few who have
offered especially when I was away. We all like our
course to be neat and tidy so please think about
trying to offer a little time to help out.
Denise Kenny.
NZ Autumn Foursomes Report
The 2011 NZ Autumn Foursomes were held at Geraldine
in April and were an outstanding success. We hosted
a full field of 128 players from all over New
Zealand. Denise Langdon and Kim Buckley – Par n.z.
directors – were wonderful organisers who ran the
whole event like clockwork. The organising committee
of myself, Denise Kenny, Jenny Kellahan, Jenny
Lawson and Ginny Bolderston worked extremely hard
prior to the event and all the members who helped
before and during the week made it the success it
was. It was great to have so many locals playing in
the event and I hope they enjoyed their experience.
The course was in superb condition after all the
preparation and the heavy rain on the practice day,
the food for the week was awesome- thanks Breakfast
1 and 2, the team behind the scenes made the whole
week run like clockwork and I know Denise and Kim
were absolutely amazed, astounded and thrilled at
how the tournament ran.
My grateful thanks to everyone who contributed – I
was very proud to lead such a successful team.
Well done to everyone.
Maybe one day Geraldine will again host a NZ event –
it was great fun and also financially rewarding for
the Club.

Reports presented to the A.G.M November 2010:
Presidents Report:
I have great pleasure in presenting
my President’s report.
2010 has been a busy year for the
golf club with a lot of progress made on the course
with development and I thank Simon for his
professional and diligent attitude to our course and
the work load Simon puts in to make it one of the
better courses in South Canterbury. Thank you to
Barry Hill as Grounds Convenor for his countless
hours put in to the club.
We have not had a year that has been
plain sailing altogether with a power blow out
affecting just about everything on the course and in
the clubhouse. The irrigation had ongoing problems
once reconnected but hopefully all is well now.
We are very thankful to all the
members who made generous donations which allowed us
to have a wonderful cart shed built. Our grateful
thanks to Noel Lewis for all the time he donated to
build the shed – it is a wonderful asset for our
club.
Development of the new bar
refurbishment has given the club house a new lease
of life. Thank you to Shona for organising
everything and also to the painting crew for a job
very well done. The discussion regarding the
retaining of draught beer gave members a chance to
have their concerns heard – thanks to all for your
healthy debate.
The purchase of a new greens mowers
has brought the grounds equipment up to a high
standard and this has put us in good stead for the
next few years.
The Club has been favoured with the
NZ Womens Autumn Foursomes to be played in April
2011 – I believe this has to be a coup for the club.
The organising committee are well underway with what
it takes to make this event successful and put us
on the map. There is still plenty of work to be done
especially during the four days of the tournament.
Although the club has not achieved
great success in tournaments or championships we
have been well represented at the top level with
Jenny Kellahan, Ginny Bolderston selected for
Aorangi SC in the Women and Simon Wright along with
our outstanding Junior George Wardell in the Men.
To all pennant teams well done –
especially the Redpath team who won their
competition for the year.
Although membership for 2010 has not
increased to what we as a club would like, we have
had several members from Grande Vue join us as
Country Members which we see as a positive for all
concerned.
It was with great sadness that we
farewelled several members and life members during
the year: Faye Crotty, Jenny Prendergast, Lee James,
Les Murphy, Annie Ussher and Chris McIntosh. The
Crotty family planted two flowering cherry trees and
donated a seat in memory of their parents who both
gave so much to the golf club during their time as
members.
Another group which must be
recognised are the members, and indeed some who are
not members, who give time, expertise and even
machinery to undertake the huge amount of voluntary
work which goes on throughout the year. Without this
support the Club would be much the worse both
physically and financially.
Finally I would like to pay tribute
to the Committee which again this year, has been
diligent in the governance and administration of the
Club. Special thanks to my secretary David Howell
and treasurer Ginny Bolderston for their continued
support.
The club has had a strong management
team and I thank you all for your work and
enthusiasm particularly the men’s and women’s
captains and vice captains- Dennis Goodwin, Ron
Gatenby, Barbara Clarke and Jenny Lawson. We were
sad to farewell Ron back to the North Island.
May I take this opportunity to wish
you and yours best wishes for the coming year.
Max Bensemann
Treasurers Report 2010
2010 has been a year of capital expenditure.
The purchase of the new Fairway Mower at the end of
2009 was made considerable easier by the $10,000
grant from The Southern Trust. This mower is
to be paid off over a 5 year period.
In September 2010 we purchased a much needed Greens
Mover to replace the old Surrounds
Mower. We were also granted $5,000 from The
Southern Trust for this mower. Parkland
Products have allowed us to spread the payment of
this mower with the final payment due in March 2011.
This year the Cart Shed was completed. Thanks
to the many very generous members who donated money
towards this project.
Unfortunately the shed revealed faulty wiring etc,
therefore the costs spiralled for this project.
It is all for the better as we new have improved
wiring in the clubhouse and better power to the
shed. Also due to the electrical fault we new
have a new fridge and freezer through insurance.
Income this year has been well up regardless of
declining membership. Green Fee collection
over the summer, THANKYOU Ron Clements, saw an extra
$2500 collected over December to January. The
36 hole was also a financial success due to member's
generous support. Men's Raffles have also seen
a great increase this year thanks to Errol Rix and
generous spending by members and others in buying
those tickets.
As this year we have spent a substantial amount on
capital expenditure it will be important to keep
spending at a minimum next year and install better
systems to get all groups in line for
accountability. With 2 large tournaments in
2011, the Women's Autumn Foursomes and the 36 hole,
income should be increased therefore building our
reserves again.
Ginny Bolderston.
Men's
Captains Annual Report 2010
I have much pleasure in presenting my
report. 2010 has been a busy year with some good
fields attending golf on Saturdays. Some very good
scoring has been evident, which is a reflection on
how well the course has been presented on club days.
Club Championships 2010 were once
again well supported. Senior winner was Simon
Wright, Intermediate Nigel Dewe, Junior A Max
Bensemann and Junior B Gary Abel.
Pennants teams were entered in five
grades. Finance and Patterson Cup teams made the
semi finals, unfortunately the Finance team was
beaten in the semis. The Patterson team won semi and
final, a good result for the club.
The 36 hole tournament was once again
a success with 124 playing in this popular event.
Congratulations to Simon Wright and
George Wardell, both selected in Aorangi rep teams
this year.
Most improved golfer this year was
Mike McKeown, 27.6 handicap on opening day to 21.6
on closing day; a great effort.
Finally, thank you to everyone who
has helped me over the last three years. I have
found this job very rewarding with the club being in
great heart. All the best to Kerry Stevens in his
new role as Club Captain.
Dennis Goodwin
Womens
Captain’s Annual Report 2010
Virtually my last meeting for the
year. Tomorrow is to be our Women's Annual General
Meeting for the Election of New Officers for next
year. If elected tomorrow Jenny Lawson will be a
very capable Captain.
I would like to thank many people who
have helped to make my job easier. Our committee has
worked well together and I wish them all good luck
for next year. Dennis Goodwin who is retiring from
Men's Captain this year has always been very
reliable and helpful as well as appearing to be
quite laid back. Jenny Lawson and Heather Oldfield
have coached and introduced several new members and
it is good to see their names appearing in results.
For the last few years we have not
had 3 Rounds of Qualifying for Championships. There
is some suggestion that some like to see it
reintroduced. Marie Shefford was Captain when
we started using our index's for Qualifying for
Champs.
One of the things which has been
introduced was to combine Grades 2 and 3 Bronze for
the Championships. It seemed to be a success this
year.
Helen Carroll's funeral is tomorrow.
It is to be held at 2.30p.m. She was still playing 9
Holes up until she became ill.
I dare say I will be available if
needed and thank you all .
Barbara Clarke Captain.
9 Hole Women’s Report 2010
We had a sticky start to the New Year
with the increase in the club’s 9 hole subscription
we had to do a bit of arm twisting to keep some of
our older members and we have lost some. We started
the year with 31, 9 hole ladies. We were having good
numbers but of late our numbers have decreased
because of ill health etc. even so we are a happy
bunch.
We were sad to farewell Lee James on
the 15th May. She fought a great fight
Our Senior Champion is Marg Matheson
and the Junior Val Trezise
Senior knockout Eleanor Moore and
Runner up Janine Huddleston
Thank you to all the members who took
part.
Our May Tournament saw 57 players
from 13 different clubs, considering it was an iffy
morning only 6 pulled out and by the time the
golfers hit the course it was a beautiful morning
and quite hot, by the time they came in.
We had 45 players for our
grandmothers tournament, was lots of fun with great
comments from out of towners. From the two
tournaments we have given the club $967.00 from
the profit of running the two tournaments.
On the 13th October our
two Mystery Bus organizers had us on the bus at
8.30am heading North and guessing where we were
going, to discover we were on our way to Methven. We
lunched in Methven at little restaurant on either
ploughmans lunch or a venison or lamb pie and salad
However thank you Eleanor R. and Ronda for a great
day out.
Our thanks go to Simon the
greenkeeper and Barry and his volunteers who make
our course a pleasure to play on. We see the Bugger
tree has shifted from 12 to 9. There have been a
number of changes around the course we wonder what
they will attack next.
Our Thanks to Alister for opening the
Bar for us for our May Tournament and also for
driving our mystery bus load of women, also to
Gordon for coming also and helping with the loading
of the bus etc. Alister handed the reigns to Sue for
our grandmother’s tournament which she managed very
well.
Thanks to Jan for all the help she
has given me this year I really have appreciated it
very much, also thank you to all my committee for
their help and input you are all a great bunch of
ladies.

Grounds report 2010
Again another busy year on the
grounds, with many hours and working bees required
for pruning, removal of trees, cutting and splitting
firewood, root and stump removal, repairing and
regrassing, as well as many cleanups around the
course, especially around and under the Gum trees.
We need a machine for this job!!
A filter system has had to be fitted
to the irrigation system to overcome sand and stones
entering the pipes and blocking sprinklers on
fairways and greens creating a lot of time consuming
work to clean out and is still ongoing.
All the greens were cored twice and
fairways once, as well as being sprayed and
fertilised and the bunkers have been topped up with
fresh sand.
Gordon Thompson has refurbished and
repainted all seats at the clubhouse and on course
thanks Gordon for your effort in completing that.
A decision was made to improve and
lengthen the practice area between No 11 and No 13
fairways and to reposition No 12 tee and fairway.
To do this the pine stand on the lefthand side of No
12 fairway had to be removed. This was carried out
thanks to Cable Logging at no cost to
the club. This involved all their staff – about 8
men and their equipment – for one full day, plus 4
hours next day. A very generous gesture. They
also organised cartage and sale of export logs and
posts. Hopefully the sale of logs, posts and
firewood will cover most of the cost of removal of
the stumps and cleaning up the area.
No 10 Ladies tee is at present being
reformed and enlarged with improved irrigation to
the tee and practice putting area. A couple of
areas on 10 & 18 fairways are also being reformed to
make mower friendly. The practice nets have been
resighted to give better access and to make them
more visible for all to use.
A new greens mower has been purchased
and the current unit now becomes the surrounds
mower. The old surrounds mower has been sold. All
other machinery and equipment is in very good
condition. The only other requirement at present is
a wash pad for cleaning down equipment this should
done early 2011.
Simon has now completed his 3rd
full year with us and every year we see a big
improvement over the whole course. Thanks
Simon for your effort and for the extra hours you
put in over and above normal when weather conditions
and work demands.
There is still a lot more work
required to finish off and regrass where trees have
been removed etc and many of the ladies tees need
improving with better irrigation to bring them up to
scratch for the women’s tournament in April.
Thanks also to the grounds committee
and other club members including the Ladies that
continue to help out at working bees etc, not only
for their time, but those who supply equipment such
as tractors, loaders, 4 wheel bikes, trailers,
chainsaws, vehicles and supplying morning teas and
catering for working bees.
As I am not seeking re-election, I
would like to wish the incoming committee all the
best for 2011.
Barry Hill
Bar Report 2010
1. Unfortunately the changing of the
guard at Superliquor coincided with the 36 Hole
Tournament. I had problems of supply and the
Treasurer had problems clearing accounts. Highfield Liquor came
along to rescue the situation, which was fortunate
as they deliver to the Club House, are cheaper and
do Direct Debit. I no longer deal with
Superliquor.
2. Power Spike. This burnt out
some electronics in the Chiller. The overhead fan
which goes 23 and 1/2 seven dropped down to zero
seven and the Glycol Unit lost it's central control
unit. That lot was part of our Insurance
Claim. Subsequently the Glycol Pump has had to be
replaced, which means all we have left of the
original equipment is a Glycol Tank.
3. New Bar. Seems to be well
received as a bright and breezy addition to the Club
House. Thank you to the band of hard working ladies
who swept cleaned, painted and talked their way
through the final stages.
4. Banking. Because my Deposit
Book ran out last month I decided to add up the
deposits. It came to a shade under $120,000. I found
a 2002 deposit book which totaled $35,000. Don't
know if this is a concern or not but flag it for
your information.
5. Thank you for all the barmen and
barmaids for your very much appreciated help.
Thank you Ginny for not swearing at me when you
can't understand what I've done.

Convenor’s Report 2010
The Twilight Ambrose was very
successful with 19 teams participating – the three
weeks went very well with fine weather on all
nights.
A Quiz night was organised to be held
in April but due to the lack of support was
cancelled. This was very disappointing as the Quiz
held the previous year was very successful.
The meals organised for the interclub
functions were enjoyed by all – thanks to the
members who helped on these occasions.
The Triangular tournament with Temuka
and Pleasant Point was well supported by Geraldine
and the trophy was again returned to our cabinet.
Well done to those members who played. Pleasant
Point are to host the next challenge.
The pot luck tea after the
Championships was enjoyed by all – a great ending to
a very good day of golf.
Thank you to all members who
supported the various functions during the year.

Wednesday Golf
Section Annual Report 2010
Once again another successful year
has been completed. Thanks to Neil and Fred for
their help. Fields of up to 45 players have been
recorded. The average for the year was 34 players.
A large number of 2’s were recorded and
a score of 46
stablefords was recorded
with overall scoring being fairly high. Meat
prizes have proved very popular.
Since all our funds are banked, no
financial report can be given. It was good to
have the support of players from Grande
Vue and
Temuka.
We we
will look forward for another successful season next
year.

Junior Golf 2010
We currently have 19 junior members,
with quite a few playing competition days.
Thanks to Kit Silcock who is doing a
fabulous job with the juniors on a Thursday
afternoon.
The annual junior tournament was held
in April. George Wardell won the Eagles Trophy for
best gross. 30 juniors attended this day. Thanks
go to Dennis Goodwin for his help in starting and
doing the results on the day
With the employment Graham Keen as
the Aorangi South Canterbury Association’s Golf
Development Manager a junior golf foundation
tournament series has been developed. During the
October school holiday 5 tournaments were held in
the district. (Levels, Temuka, Geraldine, Tinwald,
and Pleasant Point.) We were well represented by
juniors in this. Chris May won the overall gross
(total best 3 scores out of 5). This series will
continue over the Christmas and April Term breaks.
Thanks to the golf club for donating the course for
this. Thanks also to Geoff Clarke for taking care
of the catering.
We were also able to have some
members in Ambrose team’s as well.
Also during the October School
Holidays, George Wardell, Chris May, Ben Neilson and
Adam Hodges were involved in the Otago School Boys
tournament in Dunedin and were selected for the
Aorangi Piper Cup team. I was lucky enough to be
asked to go along as a “Camp Mother”. It was very
pleasing to see how well the boys did and it was a
great pleasure to take them away. They are all a
credit to the club.
This year Junior Plus was achieved.
It is great that the club has come this far.

2010 Handicappers Report
The year has gone very well, no major
hic ups. There is nothing really to report other
than cards and reports are now available on line
which can make it easier to do things from home.
Members are making a big effort to
ensure that all the relevent information is on the
card, thank you.
Thank you also to the members who do
put in cards during the week.
Special mention to Margaret Bolton
who in my absence for 3 months made sure the roll
over took place every fortnight. Well thats it.
Thank you

Reports presented to the A.G.M November 2009:
Presidents Report:
I have great
pleasure in presenting the clubs 102nd Annual report.
My last as your president. It has been a memorable 2 years. The strength of the
Management team with Ginny Bolderston and David Howell in key positions has
allowed the club to operate smoothly in challenging times.
The course
continues to improve under the capable hands of
Simon Wright with wonderful guidance from our course
convenor Barry Hill. The purchase of a John Deere
3235 fairway mower with the help of a grant from the
Southern Trust will allow more creativity in the
fairway presentation. The coring of the fairways and
the greens is an ongoing and vital part of course
maintenance and was achieved with a strong team of
volunteers. The new soil shed made for a very
successful coring. The most noticeable visible
improvements have been the undercutting of the trees
along # 11 fairway, the cleaning and clearing of
the triangle between #5 and #16 fairways and the
trimming between the #2 and #3 fairways and the
revamp of the mounds to the left of the 5th
green. The approval to finish the upgrade of the
irrigation for the greens surrounds will see those
areas targeted for improvement.
The generosity of
members sees the club currently waiting for a
building permit to start on a cart shed which will
be built behind the club house and will see the
repositioning of the practise nets to an area east
of the B-B-Q against the pine hedge. The cart shed
will allow members to continue playing longer.
The golf club has
been the target of several break-in and burglary
attempts which has come at a cost for the club. The
strengthening of the office walls and improving the
security with upgrading and re-adjusting the
sensors should help but we mustn’t become
complacent.
It is
disappointing that fund raising opportunities are
being given away with the catering the latest
venture where we are not getting enough support. The
reality of the situation means that all subs should
be raised to the same amount.
On the playing
side, the club has had a great year with an
outstanding 36 hole tournament, great competition
for trophies and a successful club championship
where for the first time the senior draw was done
through qualifying. Four men’s teams made it to the
pennant semi finals but none were able to progress
further.
The club has a
strong management team and I thank you all for your
hard work and enthusiasm particularly the men’s and
women’s club captains – Dennis Goodwin and Barbara
Clarke, it has made my role an enjoyable one, for
that I thank you.
George Leslie
Treasurers Report 2009
This year has seen a
significant spending on replacement equipment. With
the downturn in the economy Grants from the Trusts
were very difficult to get. We were extremely
fortunate to receive 10 thousand dollars from the
Southern Trust towards the purchase of the new
fairway mower. Unfortunately it was seen as not
practical to use all our cash reserves on the Mower
so it was decided to go into a 5 year finance
agreement with John Deere for the remaining 20
thousand dollars.
Purchased also from Club funds were
the 9 sprinkler upgrades to improve the surround
watering of the greens. We intend to also to fund
the next 10 sprinklers as the high dollar has kept
the price low.
Also the soil shed was completed this
year. Due to the number of purchases and the lack of
available funding the clubs cash reserves will need
to rebuild before further spending occurs.
It has been a good year as far as our
cash surplus is concerned with a very successful 36
hole tournament, a number of women tournaments,
course hires and takings from the bar up on other
years.
The Cart Shed Appeal has seen $10,000
raised from generous members, raffles and firewood
sales.
Membership is on the decline. This

Men's
Captains Annual Report 2009
I have much pleasure
presenting my annual report. I would like to thank
Grant Robertson (Vice Captain) for his help and
assistance throughout the year.
Club Days have gone well through the year with
reasonable numbers attending. Some very good
scoring has been noticeable on Saturdays which is a
reflection on how well the course is always
prepared. Thank you to Simon Wright for his high
standard of work on the course.
Our major event being the 36 hole tournament was
once again very well attended with 134 players. A
big thank you to the 36 hole committee for their
efforts in making this so successful.
Club championships were very well supported with the
reintroduction of qualifying.
Senior winner was Jason Leary
Intermediate winner was George Wardell
Junior A winner Campbell Paton & Junior B winner Sam
Webster
Pennants 2009 were played with teams in all 6
grades. Holmes Cup, Finance Cup, Patterson Cup &
Moyes trophy teams all making the semi finals
unfortunately we didn’t have all teams in the
finals. Thank you to all players who played and
better luck next year.
Inter club matches were played against Lower Waitaki
away, Mayfield away and Grande View away,
unfortunately none of these trophies came back to
our cabinet.
Most improved golfer for the year was Josh Neilson
his handicap on opening day was 28-2 and on closing
day was 17-7 which was a great effort.
Congratulations to Simon Wright making the Aorangi
team this year having been selected for every rep
fixture and Chris May selected for Aorangi
Secondary Schools team that played against Otago at
Cromwell.
Thanks also to Helen May and Kit Silcock for their
dedication to junior golf and the time spent on
Sunday mornings and Wednesday afternoons. The club
will reap the benefits of their efforts in the
future.
I am looking forward to the coming year with Ron
Gatenby as my assistant I am sure we will have a
successful year.
Dennis Goodwin
Womens
Captain’s Annual Report 2009
The first year has nearly been completed. It seems
to have gone by very quickly.
Firstly I
would like to thank my committee for all their hard
work during the year. Two girls are retiring Sally
and Sisi. Sally has done well in the office and Sisi
can now retire to her garden. Thank you both.
One of the
things we did early in the year was to organise
Coaching from Tony Batey. Thank you Sue Donovan for
organising that. Some felt the benefit straight
away. She did mostly group work in Chipping, Putting, and Course Management.
Our best
result in Pennant Teams was getting to the semi
Finals in Weekend Pennants. Better luck next year.
Numbers
have been dropping in attendance during the year
which is a concern. Hopefully it will improve next
year. Programmes for 2010 are underway and ready to
be printed.
We were
delighted to see the Best Gross Stableford Rosebowl
won by Geraldine in the Champion of Champions played
at Temuka recently. Jenny Kellahan won Best Silver.
Margaret Bolton won Best Runner Up Bronze. The
combined team of Jenny Kellahan, Margaret Campbell,
and Margaret Bolton won overall.
During the
year we were sorry to hear of the death after a long
illness of Dorothy Brenton, a long time member.
Recently we
had a pretty exciting Mystery Bus Tour superbly
organised by Jenny Lawson and Heather Oldfield. The
Golf was at Glentunnel and lunch was to be at
Terrace Downs. Why don't they just shift the rock
which got in the way of our bus in the car park! Well driven Alister. You never lose your sense of
humour.
Here's to
good success in 2010.

9 Hole Women’s Report 2009
Our 9 hole Women’s group is in good heart with 45
financial members, 39 of these being Wednesday
players.
Members keenly contested our
competitions and we had an average of 22 players
every week. This year our Senior Champion was Rachel
Harper and the Junior Rhonda Taylor.
Two successful Tournaments were held
in May & October bringing much needed funds for the
club. Thank you to Alistair for opening the bar for
us.
I would like to acknowledge the
assistance given and the co-operation with the 18
hole Women’s group for which we are most grateful.
Congratulations to Simon for the
condition of our course and also to Barry and his
volunteers. We have had much comment from visiting
players on the look of the course and the wonderful
playing conditions.
This is my last year as convenor of
the group and I wish Val Trezise, the new convenor, all the best for the 2010 season.
Jan Chisholm
Grounds report 2009
Running a Golf course is a big job,
and this year has been no exception with many hours
and working bees required for pruning, removal of
trees, cutting and splitting firewood, removing
stumps, repairing and regrassing, as well many
others for general cleanups around the course
especially under and around gum trees.
This year new
moundings at No 5 green have been established. All
the fairways have again been cored and fertilized as
well as the greens.
Trees on 11,12,
and 16 fairway and at the workshop yard were
removed, cut and split for firewood sales, also a
major cleanup and pruning was carried out in the
pine stand at the pylon - toilet area at the top of
course, and pruning of pines between No 2 and 3
fairways.
However more trees
have been replanted on course. 4 oak on the fence
line below No 9 tee and 3 ornamentals in the upper
rough area between No 1 and 8 fairways. These were
donated and planted by George Harper Senior, and the Phiskie family have planted a memorial tree for Ned
south of No 5 tee.
The open shed at
the end of the workshop has been closed in with a
roller door and incorporated into the workshop to
allow for more room for security and housing and
maintaining equipment. A new and larger soil shed
has been built making it much easier to load into
and out of, without creating a huge mess at the
workshop.
A new John Deere
rideon fairway mower was purchased this season to
replace the old gangs. It is already showing its
worth in the finish and quality of cut, and has
allowed for reshaping of many of the fairways.
Other equipment replaced this year, a more
powerfully commercial type weedeater and motorbike
trailer to replace the loan one belonging to George
Leslie.
The irrigation
electric motor burnt out early in the year and was
replaced under our insurance. Last month we ordered
the remaining adjustable sprinklers to finish off
the 9 remaining greens. These should be on hand and
installed before Christmas.
Our machinery now
in the best state it has been for many years, and to
keep the course in top condition it must not be
allowed to drift back into a tired state – but all
this comes at a cost. Our present surround mower is
getting to this stage and is in need of updating by
the next mowing season.
Simon has now
completed his 2nd full year with us and
in that time we have all seen a much improved and
well presented course. He has often been here on
weekends fertilising etc to take advantage of
weather conditions. Thanks Simon for your effort and
for your professional attitude in organising and
carrying out your duties. Also thanks must go to
John Geary and Ken Pearce for their ongoing work in
assisting Simon with mowing surrounds, tees and
fairways. The most disappointing aspect is the lack
of numbers willing to help at working bees, this may
well reflect on increase costs in future.
Finally- thanks to
the Grounds committee, and all Club members that
have contributed and helped at working bees, not
only for their time, but the people who generously
supplied equipment such as tractors, loaders, 4
wheel motorbikes, trailers and utes etc, helping to
complete the various projects. Also thanks to the
people who catered for working bees.

Bar Report 2009
1. POLITICAL CORRECTNESS
This came about earlier this year and is a conflict
between Profit and Hospitality. Golf clubs are set
up to play golf.
2. I look forward to a smooth
succession when a new Bar Manager is appointed. I
hope it is not too far in the future.
3. My sincere thankyou to all those
people who helped in the bar.

Convenor’s Report 2009
A very successful Quiz
night was held in March. The evening was well
supported by the community and I would like to thank
all who helped make the night such a great event.
The trip to Lower Waitaki in April
was well supported but unfortunately the trophy
remained there.
The Triangular tournament was held at
Temuka in April – a good number of members attended
and we were pipped on the post by Temuka. Let’s hope
for a large turnout from Geraldine to regain the
trophy when we host this event early next year.
A mid winter dinner was organised for
July but had to be cancelled due to lack of support.
Thanks to Errol Rix who organises the
Saturday raffles and thanks also to all the members
who support them.

Wednesday Golf
Section Annual Report 2009
On behalf of Bill Seyb
(Convenor), Neil Collins and myself, I have pleasure
in presenting the 2009 report.
It has again been a favourable year
with an average of 30 players per week. We welcomed
about 10 new players for the year. We unfortunately
are losing some through natural attrition.
Some good scores were recorded. Brian
Fawdray won the score for the best 15 rounds with a
total of 596 stablefords. He also scored 47 points
in one round. Neil Collins scored 13 twos for the
year.
We increased our charges to $4 due to
the rise in the cost of everything but still managed
to pay $1 per player each week to the club.
We visited Waimak Gorge early in the
year and they returned the visit in September. A
shield has been donated; we won it in September.
The nine hole players are very few.
We are looking forward to the 2010 season.
Fred Brown
2009 Handicappers Report
The 2009 year has gone
well. Thank you to the management committee for
installing broad band this has certainly made the
roll over a lot quicker and easier.
Thank you to Ginny Bolderston for her
continued updating of new and present members, we
have managed to keep the club list up to date most
of the time. May be next year it might make my job
easier if the enrolment forms were handed to me then
I have all the relevant information to put into the
computer.
Players please continue to put the
correct information on the card and please check it
before signing; the biggest mistake I have noticed
is peoples adding up. I have also noticed that with
some members changing from 9 hole to 18 hole and
vice versa there seems to be some confusion when it
comes to the cards they are handing in. Please, 9
holers cannot hand in a card if they have played 18
holes. 18 holers are allowed to hand in 9 holes but
make sure the next 9 are different to the first,
with no 18 holes played in between.
During the year the programme has
given us some headaches but I have managed to sort
these out; please, if anyone does have a problem
ring me first before trying to sort it out by
themselves.
Lastly a big thank you to all the
people who enter the cards after their day of golf,
it makes my job easier and I don’t have to be down
here every day. A Big thank you also to Margaret
Bolton; she does the roll over for me if I am unable
to do so.

Reports presented to the A.G.M November 2008:
Presidents Report:
I have great pleasure in presenting
my presidents report. This year 2008 has been a
particularly exciting one for the club. The launch
of our fabulous website has widened the reach of the
Geraldine Golf Club. What stirling jobs our web
controller Susan Lyttle and chief reporter /
photographer Geoff Clarke have done to show the
course off to the outside world. The brilliant up to
date information and photos are a credit to all
contributing parties.
The appointment of Simon Wright as
the green keeper has seen a lift in the quality of
the course as his knowledge and experience brought
new ideas to the fore. Barry Hill (Grounds Convenor)
has lead a team of volunteers that have worked
tirelessly during the year.
Major cleaning round the green keepers shed, tree
and stump removal and wood splitting has seen the
appearance of the course change.
Making the decision to core the greens twice a year
and the fairways as well will lead to better playing
conditions. These have also been improved by
tweaking the irrigation system.
The installing of new pop-ups round greens will
allow work to begin on improving the surrounds. The
club purchased a John Deere tractor and upgraded the
rough mower which will allow the job to be done
quicker.
The club has had a strong management
team and I thank you all for your work and
enthusiasm particularly the men’s and women’s
captains and vice captains- Dennis Goodwin, Grant
Robertson, Sisi Silcock & Barbara Clarke.
It was a great year for the club with
an outstanding 36 hole tournament, great competition
for trophies and a successful finals day for the
club championships. Congratulations to all those who
competed. It’s of note that Geraldine was able to
field a team in each men’s pennant grade, making the
finals in two sections and winning the Patterson
Pennant.
The future of a club is new members
and we are thrilled to have so many juniors
currently playing golf. Juniors are being coached,
attending tournaments and fund raising has been
carried out to help these golfers.
It was particularly pleasing to award
two life memberships during the year to Stuart
Peterson and Ken Pearce for their great contribution
to the club.
It was with great sadness we
farewelled an office bearer Aylene Stalker during
the year, a life member Ivan Lewis and members Ron
Luisetti, Murray Ramsay and Ned Phiskie.
I have enjoyed the excellent work of
Shona Bensemann as secretary and Ginny Bolderston as
treasurer, it has made my role an enjoyable one, for
that I thank you.
George Leslie
President
Treasurers
Report:
The financial year has been one of
increasing costs and decreasing membership.
Costs (including the salary for the Greenkeeper)
have increased on last year by 12 %. Total income
from Subs and green fees are also down.
These factors have had a noticeable affect on the
annual club profit.
Individual committees surplus have remained steady
with the bar consistently the best performer. The
profit from the 36 hole tournament this year was
down due to lack of sponsorship.
Capital Expenditure this year on replacement tractor
and mower was $36150 and $3500 was spent on
improving the green keeper’s shed. We were very
fortunate to receive $10,000 from the Trusts
Charitable Foundation for the purchase of the new
tractor, although our application for funds from the
Pub Charity to install 18 new sprinklers was turned
down.
With
fewer volunteers available for course maintenance
the cost of our assistant green keeper will increase
also.
Over
the coming year we are going to work towards a
financial plan for the club. This will involve
assessing ways of improving income over and above
subscriptions and green fees. A strategy to raise
funds for the development of the club house and
continued improvement of the course will also be put
in place.

I
have much pleasure presenting my annual report.
I
would like to take this opportunity to firstly thank
Grant Robertson (Vice Captain) for all his help and
support throughout the year, and also Shona
Bensemann our Secretary for her dedication and
efficiency, helping to make my job a lot easier.
The
club days on Saturdays have run smoothly through the
year apart from the weather gods in the winter, who
seemed to think rain or cold wind was needed on
Saturdays.
I
must also thank Simon Wright our green keeper for
his presentation of the course and the people mowing
the greens on a Saturday morning before we commence
play.
Our
major event of the year was the 36 hole tournament,
which was a huge success with a full field of 128
players and 4 people were missing out on ballot. The
winner of the Templer Salver was Mark O’Malley from
Ashburton.
Entries seem to be growing with the Sunday morning
breakfast going down a treat. Thank you also to all
the helpers who made this run so successfully.
The
club championships were very well supported this
year with 48 entered, the grades were changed to
accommodate this number. Biggest entry was 15 in
the senior grade 0 – 9. Winners were Jason Fowler
(Snr), John Geary (Int), Grant Robertson (Jnr A),
Adam Hodges (Jnr B) Well done to all the Club
Champions and thank you to everyone who entered.
Pennants 2008 were played with teams in each of the
six grades. It was pleasing to have the Holmes Cup
& Patterson Cup teams make the final the Holmes
narrowly being beaten by Ashburton. Success was
achieved by the Patterson Cup team of John Geary,
Mark Wood, Dennis Goodwin & Neil Collins beating St
Andrews in the final. Lindsay Robertson and Tony
Nielson also played during the year. Thank you to
everyone who participated through the year also to
the caddies and supporters who attended semi finals
and finals matches.
Interclub matches against Burnham (away) Lower
Waitaki (home) Mayfield (home) Waimairi Beach (home)
were successful with a narrow loss to Grande Vue at
home.
Junior golf has gone very well this year with eight
boys regularly playing on a Saturday. It has been a
pleasure to have these young men competing with
success in the club this year.
Special thanks must go to Helen May for her
dedication and support, taking them on these trips
away.
Congratulations to Chris May who had a hole in one
at the Otago school boy championships at Cromwell.
Also thanks to Kit Silcock who along with Helen has
coached school children on Sunday mornings and
Wednesday evenings.
Hopefully we will see more juniors come through the
club, it is one area we all need to support, and the
rewards will be enormous.
I
look forward to the coming year and would like to
take this opportunity to thank everyone who has
helped Grant and myself make this year successful.

Womens Captain Report
It
is with much pleasure and a bit of sadness that I
present my final report to the Club.
We
have seen much change during the past year with the
amalgamation of the Women’s and Men’s Golf into one
unit.
Within our Club we have had a number of successes:
Winners of the Silver Pennant and Open Pennants.
Other pennant teams represented our club with pride.
There are many people to thank for making my two
years such a success. Firstly the members for
helping out where needed with prizes, an extra pair
of hands, working in the starters area or the
kitchen.
My
two committees deserve a special mention for all the
work behind the scenes that they have done over the
two years. It has been rewarding to see how they
have gained confidence through their
responsibilities. It made my job easier and the club
stronger.
We have set a high standard with our work in
organising tournaments which is often recognised and
commented on favourably by other clubs. They are
quite envious.
I
wish to thank Maureen as my secretary, who is
stepping down, for the hours of work that she has
willingly done and for her support.
I
wish to thank Barbara for her support and hard work
and wish her all the best for the coming two years,
as well as her committee.

9 Hole Womens Report
The
9 hole Women’s group started the year with 42
financial members, 38 of these being Wednesday
players.Opening day on 13 February we celebrated 10 years
since the 9 hole group was formed. We invited
members no longer playing from that 1st
year to join us and a most enjoyable day was had.
These members expressed delight that the group is
still going strong.
Our
programme has been full and varied, with members
keenly contesting our competitions and playing away
at many Tournaments.
Our
Senior Champion was Rosemary Keenan and the Junior
Champion Peggy Lines.
We
held two very successful Tournaments, in May and
October with players coming from far and wide.
I
would like to acknowledge the assistance given and
co-operation with the 18 hole women for which we are
most grateful.
Our
thanks also to the greenkeeper and the groundsmen
who keep our course in such wonderful playing
condition, it is the envy of many other clubs.

Grounds
This year has been a very busy one with a lot
happening on course.
There has been many hours spent and lots of working
bees – pruning and removing trees, cutting and
splitting firewood, removing stumps and repairing
and regrassing these areas.
Currently Simon is changing the sprinkler around the
greens to an adjustable type so water can be applied
to the approaches and surrounds without over
watering the greens. Some of these areas will have
to be reworked and regrassed to overcome thatched
and bare areas that we have at present. New cups
and pins were purchased in May and installed prior
to the 36 hole Tournament.
The greens were cored twice last year and will
continue to be done so each year, also the fairways
have been cored for the first time, as well as
fertilised and sprayed and they are now showing the
benefit of this work.
Some trees that were considered to be too close to
some of the greens and fairways have been removed to
overcome moisture being drawn away from these
areas. All the trees removed have been split for
firewood, for much needed revenue. 7 large trees
have also been removed from around the greenkeeper’s
shed, and this has allowed us to generally tidy up
this area. A room within the sheds has been added
for the greenkeeper to have some comfort for tea
breaks, with hot water, a bench, table and chairs
etc, most of which have been donated. This is also
used for an office and computer room.
Our machinery is generally in good condition, with a
new tractor purchased this year to replace our very
tired Kuboto. The rough mower was also updated so
as to speed up this time consuming job. Timaru
Honda generously donated a 4 wheel motor bike for on
course use. Our next capital cost will be to
replace the fairway mower, possibly by the next
mowing season.
Simon has now completed his first year with us and
with his past experience & expertise we can already
see a vast improvement over the whole course.
Finally I would like to thank the grounds committee
& all club members that have contributed and
attended working bees, not only for their time, but
those who have generously supplied tractor loaders,
trailers and other equipment to help in our various
projects.
Thank you all.

Bar Report
The
programme to replace old and tired equipment is now
complete. The Glycol tank which can be temperamental
was considered at over $5000 to be too expensive.
An
income of $24,500 from visiting club members
(Tournaments, course bookings, pennants) reflects
the well groomed Golf Course we appreciate so much.
Also the hospitality we offer especially the 36 hole
tournament means we are of good repute and brings
people back again.
The
work involved keeps me on good trim, Last year we
(mostly men) drank 92 kegs of beer and 113 crates of
beer, 87 being Speights. The whiskey drinkers get
through a bottle of Johnny Walker and Chivas Regal a
month.
The
Ladies like wine, ginger beer and lemon lime and
bitters. It all sounds very jolly.
My
special thanks to all the servers without whom my
life would be extremely difficult.

Catering Report
Thanks to those members who have helped with
catering for pennants and other visiting players.
The monthly roster system seemed to work well and
there were several months when no catering was
required. We are indeed grateful to have Michelle
Robertson and Ruth Goodwin catering for the larger
functions and we wish them well with their new
catering business.
Social Report
Raffles have been very well supported on Saturdays
and I thank all members for their contributions.
Thanks also to members who have assisted with
raffles during the season.
Unfortunately there have been no social happenings
to report on this year.
Wednesday Mid Week Golf
Once again another year goes by. We had average
fields of about 30 players per week. Some very good
scores were recorded the highest being 44 points
recorded by M Oldfield and C Donovan.
In
the second half of the year we raised the entry fee
to $4. The total banked was $1,455.00.
We
had visitors regularly from Temuka and others who
were on holiday in the area.
More 9 holers would be welcome. It was also good to
have the schoolboys during the school holidays.
Special thanks to Neil and Fred who helped.
Prepared by Fred Brown on behalf of Bill Seyb,
Convenor.
Junior Golf Report
Good evening to you all it has been an exciting year
for Junior Golf in Geraldine.
The
W.S.Troupe Cup (Junior’s Match Play competition) was
played for by 7 juniors and was won by Paul Hodges.
In
April we held a junior tournament. We had 72
entries. The format was handicapped players (split
into grades), non handicapped 18 holes and non
handicapped 9 holes. Dennis and his team did an
excellent job of sorting the draw, handicap system
and the results. Brendon McHaffie won the best
gross on the day. Thanks to the local businesses
that supported us in this event. Cable Logging
Geraldine Ltd, Barkers Fruit Processors and the
Shearers Quarters. The Club’s support for this event
was greatly appreciated by all of us. I have also
been offered support for next years tournament
already.
Kit
Silcock has been taking the juniors during the week,
which has been absolutely fantastic for the juniors
(he is great on technique), with approximately 10
attending each week.
We
have had 3 juniors attend a week away with Aorangi
Golf at a tournament at Cromwell in October.
Congratulations to Paul Hodges, Christopher May and
Adam Hodges for being chosen for this. Thanks also
to the club members for the financial support of the
boys attending this event.
12
juniors attended the junior tournament at Tinwald in
October (it was a shame that it was the same time as
Cromwell) It was a great day with 3 parents plus
myself attending.
4
handicapped players (2 Grande Vue handicapped
players - dual members with Denfield), 4 non
handicapped (18 holes), 4 non handicapped (9 holes),
The
weather was wonderful, and the golf was great. A
Thank you must go to the Tinwald Golf club for
supporting this event.
Results:
Jayden Paterson (13) had a great day especially as
it was his first time at 18 holes (off the junior
plus tees) and did 103 off the stick which came back
to a net 61. Looking forward to seeing him playing
more golf.
George Wardell had an 84 off the stick (net 63)
Phillip Henderson had a 96 of the stick (net 71)
We
are currently looking at the junior plus programme
with a meeting being held with Mark Sandri, Dennis
Goodman, Grant Robertson and Myself to start the
procedure. We are now ready for the next stage of
this.
Billy Cosgriff, Grant Robertson, Avrill Burrows and
I attended a training day for Junior Plus. We then
each had to submit a paper (the ladies were a bit
slow with this, playing too much golf) the next
stage is for Dawn Sandri to come and observe a
training session.
We
look forward to another successful year of junior
golf, with support being given to juniors who are
getting ready to make the move to 18 hole golf.
I
would like to personally thank the club and the
members for the support they shown junior golf in
Geraldine.
It
is great to see the investment in the future of
golf.
