Holmes Cup 2010:             Points Table

Holmes Cup Draw with Tinwald

A new look Geraldine combination managed an 8½ all draw with Tinwald when they met in the second round of the Homes Cup played at Highfield on Sunday 2 May.

Without old hands Jason Leary and Matt Morrison, regular players were moved up the order to make way for newcomers Richard Lawson and George Wardell. Chris McIntosh was called in again after an absence of some years from this level.

The end result hinged on putting and players on both sides were guilty of missing relatively gettable puts at crucial moments.

Although going down 4 and 2 to his opponent in the singles, debutante young George Wardell kept his head and birdied the last two holes to secure a four ball victory for himself and his partner Richard Lawson.

Detailed results were:- Singles: Simon Wright beat Nigel Heney 2-up, Ron Gatenby tied with Regan Stills, Chris McIntosh lost to Mark Kelly 1-down, Billy Cosgriff lost to Adam Marshall 2-down, Richard Lawson beat John Smitherm 3 and 2, George Wardell lost to Jeff Hewitt 4 and 2.
Fourballs: Wright and Gatenby beat Heney and Stills 1-up, McIntosh and Cosgriff tied with Kelly and Marshall, Lawson and Wardell beat Smitherm and Hewitt 2-up.

Holmes Cup Loss

Geraldine came a distant second to Timaru when the clubs met in the first round of the new look 2010 Homes Cup Competition played at Gleniti on Sunday 11 April, Timaru recording a 12 points to five victory.

This year’s competition sees the teams’ size cut back to six players from last year’s eight man sides.  At the same time the South Canterbury Finance Cup sides have been increased from four to six and players may be switched between the two grades throughout the season.

Conditions were good on Sunday with little wind and warm temperatures being the order of the day. The Gleniti greens were still recovering from recent coring and proved to be a little uneven in quality around the course.

The highlight of Geraldine’s performance was the one under par 71 shot by Ron Gatenby as he demolished his opponent, Timaru Club Captain Grant Williams, 5 and 4.

Detailed results were.- Singles: Simon Wright lost to Warren Pretorius 1 down, Matt Morrison lost to Roger Paterson 4 and 3, Billy Cosgriff beat Tony Moir 2 up, Ron Gatenby beat Grant Williams 5 and 4, Noel Lewis lost to Steve Doyle 2 down, Kevin Kerse lost to Barry Walsh 3 and 2.
Four balls: Wright and Morrison lost to Pretorius and Paterson 4 and 3, Cosgriff and Gatenby beat Moir and Williams 5 and 4, Lewis and Kerse lost to Doyle and Walsh 2 down.

Geraldine No 1, Simon Wright tees off over the water at Gleniti’s fourth hole.
Waiting on the tee are Matt Morrison and Warren Pretorius.
